TheContreras Firesurprised fire crews by cresting the ridge that hosts the observatory after midnight Friday morning.
A brush fire that has been dubbed the#ContrerasFireis burning near@KittPeakNatObs.
The observatory was evacuated at 4:45 pm MST today.
Were grateful to the firefighters hard at work on the mountain.
As of Friday it has burned more than 11,000 acres and is zero percent contained.
Over 300 firefighting personnel are currently working the fire.
